Eating In San Sebastian

Chances are, if you're visiting San Sebastian, you're excited to try all the delicious food this great city has to offer. Start your morning with a trip to La Bretxa, the food market, where you can sample on some local culture by tasting some guindilla peppers. Guindilla peppers can be incredibly hot, so make sure to season your tongue with some local artisanal sheep's milk. Then, head on over to any one of the many pintxos bars and try some gilda - canned anchovies prepared in small tins but bursting with to-die-for flavor. You can also try tortilla (Spanish potato omelet) or foie gras, two decadent food options that are cheap, light, and will have you begging for more. As San Sebastian is right by the water, you'll have an abundance of options when it comes to seafood. Try salt cod, either as a fritter, an omelet, or pil-pil style - a special technique conceived in San Sebastian. Kokotxas, also known as fish cheeks, are a Basque specialty, and you'll find unique fish dishes like merluza (hake), lenguado (sole) and rodaballo (turbot) almost anywhere you go. For dessert, you absolutely must try a Basque Cake, a shortbread filled with either almond cream or black cherry preserves
