Depending on the departure time the journey takes from 7.5 to 10 hours. Buses depart from the early hours of the morning and continue throughout the day until around 6:00 p.m. Departures are from Manchester's Chorlton Street Coach Station, a few minutes from the city and linked by local buses, trams and taxis. Southampton Bus Station is in the city centre.
Cross Country Trains run three direct services between the two cities every day, taking just over 4 hours. All are morning departures. Virgin Trains also operate six daily routes. Again they all depart in the morning with a similar journey time and a connection in London. Departures are from Manchester Piccadilly Station, located in the heart of the city and well placed for transport links. Trains arrive at Southampton Central Station. Taxi ranks are located outside both stations.
