How to Get to Stockholm by Train

Although it is not possible to catch direct trains to Stockholm in Sweden from the UK, by making just a few changes along the route, the Swedish capital can be reached via rail. London St Pancras International runs regular Eurostar services every day of the week to Brussels in Belgium. From Brussels Midi Station, it is then necessary to catch the regular service to Cologne Central. These trains are operated by either Thalys or Intercity-Express. Copenhagen in Denmark is the next destination after this. The overnight service between Cologne and Copenhagen is run by City Night Line. From Copenhagen, there are regular trains to the Swedish capital, operated by SJ seven days a week. From Stockholm Central, there are excellent local transport connections to the nearby city centre, including buses and a metro system.

The capital of Sweden is a city of contrast, with the many medieval streets now housing modern street cafes and cool designer boutiques. The shopping facilities in the city are first class, particularly for the fashion sector. The Sodermalm area of the city is renowned for both for great shopping and for being home to a wide selection of excellent eateries selling freshly baked pastries and a number of bars selling local Swedish beer and vodka. In contrast to the more modern aspects of Sodermalm, Stockholm Old Town, also known as Gamla Stan, is a picturesque maze of cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and historic buildings which date back centuries. Both Stockholm Cathedral and Stockholm Palace, the official residence of the Swedish Royal Family, are located in Gamla Stan. While in Stockholm, it would be remiss not to trace the footsteps of the city's most famous music export by taking an Abba-themed walking tour of the city.
