Alfa Pendular, the fastest high-speed tilting train in Portugal, is owned by Comboios de Portugal. Comboios de Portugal, better known colloquially as CP, is wholly owned by the Portuguese government. CP is the country’s largest railway operator, serving almost all of Portugal. Alfa Pendular is a six-car electric train that uses unique tilting technology to ensure a smooth and comfortable ride even at speeds of up to 137 mph.

Train Ticket Types Offered by Alfa Pendular

Alfa Pendular offers two different ticket types for travellers to choose from based on their budgets and the amenities they’d like to enjoy during their train journey. The ticket types available on these Portuguese high-speed rail trains are Comfort, the company’s first-class ticket, and Tourist, the second-class ticket. There are also reserved seats for those with limited mobility in wheelchairs. You will also find an adapted toilet on board each Alfa Pendular train.

Do I need an ID or a passport to travel with Alfa Pendular?

Yes. In order to book your ticket with Alfa Pendular, you will need to provide a form of ID. When you board the train, be sure that you have this same form of ID available to show to the attendant checking your ticket. This is usually in the form of a valid passport from your home country.

Is there a free luggage allowance on Alfa Pendular trains?

Yes. All passengers can carry small hand luggage for personal use free of charge on Alfa Pendular trains. These smaller items must fit on the luggage rack or under your seat. You may also carry one item of larger luggage, but any more luggage is subject to the availability of space on the train.
