Stuttgart

Stuttgart is a vibrant, friendly city best known for its cultural attractions and as one of the homes of the German motor industry. Mercedes-Benz and Porsche are both based in Stuttgart. Both have large and fascinating museums in landmark buildings that are well worth a visit. Much of the city is pedestrianised and there's great pleasure to be had in simply strolling around and taking in the sights. Few old buildings survived World War II, but the Old Palace ("Altes Schloss") which dates from 1300, and its counterpart the New Palace ("Neues Schloss") from the 1700s are well worth seeking out. There are several excellent art galleries, among them the collections of the state gallery, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, which is spread through several buildings. Startling contemporary art can be found at the Kunstgebäude ("Art Building" in German). The city's zoo at the Wilhelma botanical gardens is a must for families.
