Many snow goers head to the mountains in February and Sölden in Austria offers the best slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels. Beginners can start easy on the Giggijoch, while more advanced skiers can try the black slopes in the glaciers or discover the off-piste areas. Make sure you don’t miss the Big 3 too – the 3 biggest mountains with heights above 3000m, which offer unique panoramic views of the impressive landscape.
Berlin is all about movies in February, with the famous Berlinale featuring as the must attend event. Actors from all over the world will travel to Berlin during this time with the hop that they will head home with a Golden Bear for their work, but for us it’s just a lot of fun with many movies and premiers to check out.
Looking for a warmer place to escape the winter for a few days? Lisbon is a great city to relax, walk the streets or check out the cultural sites such as the Mosteiro Dos Jeronimos, or the Casatelo de Sao Jorge. If you’re planning to stay for multiple days we recommend you visit the nearby town of Sintra too. Being a former summer destination of Portugese kings, the town is filled with beautiful hilltop coloured palaces and castles overlooking gardens and houses in the valley.
Val Thorens, France
If you want to ensure you’re heading to a mountain that is sure to have snow, especially towards the end of February when the snow is sometimes melting, then head to Val Thorens. As one of Europe’s highest ski resorts the snow usually hangs around in this area a little longer and lifts are open up until May, perfect for a ski holiday that guarantees snow and offers you even more sunny days!
If you think of February in Cologne, you think of Carnival. You’ll find the streets bustling with dressed up characters and plenty of parties that last for days. The carnival season officially kicks off the 11th of November, but the ‘crazy days’ take place between Fat Thursday and Ash Wednesday. Enjoy the parades and stage shows, or go to one of the bars for some nice, smaller events. And don’t forget to dress up of course!
Another winter sun destination for your February travel-list is located in Spain on one of the Canary Islands. Being the second biggest of the islands, Fuerteventura offers visitors everything you need for your winter break, including temperatures around 20 degrees. Fuerteventura is blessed with the longest beach line of the Canary islands, including some surfing hotspots such as La Caleta and El Costillo. And don’t forget to try the delicious Spanish tapas and cheese while you’re there!
This little town in the north of Italy has a unique way of celebrating Carnival, turning the whole village into a battelfield of fighting. The ‘battle of the oranges’ involves thousands of people divided into on-the-ground teams that throw oranges at the people on the floats. Make sure you’re there between the 6th and 9th of February to be a part of the action and don’t forget your oranges!
